Blog: ALL IP

The VoIP revolution has not materialised – instead, IP has evolved and permeated fixed line telephony.

Affectionately referred to as POTS (Plain Old Telephony System) in the English-speaking world, TDM-based voice communication is in decline. IP protocols, first among them SIP, are well-established now and all-IP has become a reality.

Infrastructure managers in the business world will wake up to this fact, at the latest when their TVAs have reached the end of the line or UCC is about to be introduced to their company.

Patrick Bichler, Head of Infrastructure, SFS Group: “In the course of our strategic telephony update, we also considered ‘all-IP' and the convergence of voice and data networks. atrete provided very competent professional support. We are now well-prepared for our imminent roll-out in Switzerland and look forward to joining forces again to tackle further challenges in the international environment.”

Which points must be considered when converting to all-IP?

  • Does the conversion simply entail the replacement of existing functionalities?
  • Are the users asking for a comprehensive UCC solution?
  • What is the end-device strategy? If need be, are mobile devices sufficient to accompany the soft clients?
  • How should mobile telephony be included in the system?
  • Should a video conferencing solution be included?
  • Are the contact centre and/or trading voice systems also due for life-cycle management?
  • What is the migration path using SIP trunks instead of the previous BRIs/PRIs?
  • Is it preferable to build or buy?
  • Should existing DECT systems be replaced or do the latest technologies such as 'small cell' and 'WiFi calling' offer new solutions?

Any all-IP migration project must address these questions and more to ensure that the project will be successfully completed by the end of 2017.

We wish you all the best for your all-IP conversion. Please contact us if you require further information and assistance from our consultants.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Kaufmann
